WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Trump discussed trade with India at a press conference Tuesday, as the Prime Minister of India meets with nations that are historically U.S. adversaries, such as China.
In August, President Trump placed tariffs on India for "supporting the Russian war machine."
Senator Maria Cantwell from Washington criticized the policy, saying what Washington fruit growers and exporters need is more free trade agreements with India, not less.
"We need to be building alliances to markets around the globe," Cantwell said. "The best way that we can counter Russia and China is to build alliances with Europe, with Asia."
"When we leave ourselves out of these markets, they do go build [other] alliances," Cantwell said.
