A Twin Cities man is in custody after he allegedly assaulted two relatives in Otter Tail Lake over the weekend, choking one woman underneath the water.

The Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office said the victims, women ages 25 and 64, escaped the attack without major injuries after a man who lives nearby heard the commotion and intervened.

The suspect, a 42-year-old Shakopee man, remains jailed Tuesday afternoon, but criminal charges have not yet been filed.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded to the lake shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday after a 911 caller reported a man was attempting to drown family members on the lake.

The agency said the neighbor and family members helped free the two victims from the attack and brought them to safety before law enforcement arrived.
