ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - In 2022, to address violent crime, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares declared a “Ceasefire” in Virginia and out of the 13 cities he’s targeting, four of our hometowns are on that list: Martinsville, Lynchburg, Danville and Roanoke.

Ceasefire Virginia is aiming to address violent crime activity among serious and repeat offenders. The big question: How will Ceasefire reduce violent crime?

Miyares, who is running for re-election this year, says since 2024, homicide rates have been reduced 62 percent and he credits efforts like Ceasefire.

In 2021, Virginia’s murder rate was at a 20-year high, violent crime at a 30-year high, and addiction was the highest in history.
