LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - It’s that time of year again when love bugs take over Southwest Louisiana. Some call them a nuisance, others a seasonal sign.

Every time you see two love bugs connecting, they’re mating. After just a few days, they lay eggs and die.

Experts say the recent heavy rains and high humidity in Lake Charles created the perfect conditions for a bigger swarm.

“They like the hot roadways. They like hot areas for some reason; the roadways are a hotter area because of the sunshine.” Jimmy Meaux of the LSU AgCenter said. “They also tend to like vehicles because of the carbon monoxide they put out. For some reason, they’re attracted to carbon, or it could be a lawn mower or anything that puts out those types of odors.”
