Tuesday could be regarded in many ways as the first day of a new season, but not surprisingly in Washington, the unofficial start of autumn looked a lot like the unofficial end of summer, a delightful day of dry, bright warmth.

In Washington, a warm sun shone in a sea of blue, amid fleets of clouds, thick and thin, white and gray. The high temperature was 80 degrees. That is five below the average in the capital for the second day of the month of September. But it is very close to the temperatures that ended August.
