A St. Paul high school student is in custody Tuesday after being found in possession of a gun on the first day of class, according to authorities.

The St. Paul Police Department confirmed officers responded to Johnson Senior High School on the city's East Side around 9:30 a.m. after it was reported school staff had secured the 14-year-old male student and the weapon.

Police said the student was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center in connection with possession of a firearm.

Principal Jamil Payton said in a letter to families that the gun was found after school officials received a tip that a student may have brought a weapon to school.
