RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina State Board of Education panel recommended extending the grace period for interest to accrue on the approximately $3.4 million Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools owes the Department of Public Instruction.
The panel recommended extending the grace period from September 1 to November 20, 2025, which will be dependent on the school district presenting a "good-faith repayment plan" to the Board of Education by November 4. If approved, WS/FCS would start making payments on its debt starting January 20, 2026.
A final decision on the panel's recommendation will happen at the State Board of Education meeting on Thursday.
"It gives us a little bit of time, we can organize a little bit, think more about how we’re going to pay this debt off, and I’m very pleased
