SUMTER, S.C. (WIS) - A new emergency shelter and a tiny home village have become a part of a bigger mission to prevent homelessness in Sumter County.

According to Sumter United Ministries, as many as 80 people in the area are suffering from homelessness this year.

The 40-bed Emergency Shelter allows anyone to stay for 30 days. Five temporary tiny homes next door will also house mothers with kids up to eight years old.

Those families can stay in the tiny homes for up to two years. There is a qualification process and rules for anyone who stays in either facility. Anyone who stays in either facility will have to save 85% are their income to work towards independent living.
