Jeffrey Wright is reflecting on the backlash over his casting in The Batman as Jim Gordon.

In a recent interview, Wright shared his thoughts on the controversy generated by comic book purists who were critical of his casting for a role that had been played by white men previously.

Wright was the first Black actor to play the Gotham City police commissioner, following in J.K. Simmons in Zack Snyder’s Justice League , Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Pat Hingle in the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher films, and Ben McKenzie in the Gotham TV serie s.
