HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A longtime lei stand at Honolulu’s airport is facing an uncertain future as the owner begs the state to give her more time.
Bonnie Groendyke is the current owner of Gladys’ Lei Stand, which was started by her great-grandmother in the 1940s.
“It means a lot to us. It’s in our blood. It’s in our generation to keep up, to do what grandma them once did,” she said.
The business was passed down through the generations to Groendyke, who is doing her best to navigate a brutal economy.
“It is hard. With business being slow now and you know like the only time that we really do make ends meet would be like Mother’s Day, graduation,” she said.
