TEMPE, Ariz. — Concerned parents in the Kyrene School District protested outside of Tuesday's governing board meeting to express their concerns about proposed school closures.

Last week, the district's Long-Range Planning Committee announced its recommendation to close nine schools in the district: four schools west of the I-10 and five schools east of the freeway.

The schools recommended for closure are Kyrene de la Colina, Kyrene de la Estrella, Kyrene Akimel A-al Middle School, Kyrene Traditional Academy, Kyrene de la Mariposa, Kyrene de la Mirada, Kyrene del Norte, and Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School. Kyrene del Milenio would be repurposed as a gifted academy.

The recommendation came after a demographer used data points to study the district and develop a closure plan.
