A Leeds neighbourhood is pungent with the smell of gas wafting through the air after "pipes burst" during the early hours.

Gas and water pipes burst some time overnight in Alwoodley with crews working to fix the leaks from about 6am today (Wednesday, September 3). The leaks occurred in Sunningdale Avenue, close to King Lane.

Yorkshire Water officers excavated a large hole on the pavement outside homes. Safety barriers have been erected around the scene which is next to a tree. Northern Gas officers are presently investigating the area to find out what caused the gas leakage.

Residents reported water being cut off to homes at the time but this is yet to be confirmed. Northern Gas and Yorkshire Water have been asked for a comment.
