On the heels of Donald Trump admitting that using “One Big Beautiful Bill” to describe the megabill the GOP majority forced through Congress is falling flat with voters, the White House will hold meetings with Republican lawmakers on Wednesday for a rebranding session hosted by press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
According to a report from Politico’s Meredith Lee Hill and Rachael Bade, efforts by GOP lawmakers to convince attendees at town halls about the benefits of the unpopular bill are "sputtering," so the White House is being forced to step in.
Politico is reporting that the often abrasive Leavitt, along with Trump adviser James Blair, will be walking lawmakers and members of their staff through portions of the bill that the president wants them to highlight with the hope it will stop the bleeding before the midterms.
“House Republicans say they’re all ears for more advice,” the report states before noting, “Some Hill Republicans bristle at the notion their massive bill isn’t being well received or understood by voters — despite a spate of angry crowds at GOP lawmakers’ town halls and alarming polling that shows dismal views of the bill’s safety-net cuts and deficit impact. But they are willing to take direction from Trump on their sales pitch.”
Senate Finance Chair Mike Crapo (R-ID) admitted they need some help.
“I don’t know that the name of the bill is really that definitive about the messaging on it,” he remarked and added that Republicans need to “make it very clear that the so-called cuts in Medicaid were not what they are being described in the media, and in fact that they were true, waste, fraud and abuse.”
Hoping for the best, one insider said, “We are going to highlight the issues on which the party’s brand and trust factor is strong, and on which issues it can be shored up with the appropriate messages to voters.”
