WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 63-year-old male inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday night at the Sedgwick County Jail

Deputies discovered the inmate at approximately 10:04 p.m. on Tuesday. Sedgwick County EMS and the Wichita Fire Department responded and took the inmate to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:44 p.m.

The inmate, a resident of Blanchard, Okla., had been in custody since June 21, on charges of aggravated assault, criminal threat, violation of a protective order and possession of narcotics.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been notified, and detectives are conducting an investigation. Preliminary evidence indicates the death was the result of suicide through self-asphyxiation.
