US-IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT-LOS ANGELES

DESCRIPTION: Gregory Bovino’s distinguished Border Patrol career was in a downward spiral. In August 2023, he was relieved of command of the agency’s El Centro, California, sector, where he rose to be one of 20 regional chiefs across the country. Thirty minutes after testifying at a congressional hearing, Bovino said he was removed from his position and asked, “Are you going to retire now?” He did not retire and, at 55, he is leading immigration enforcement in Los Angeles, which the federal government has called “ground zero for the effects of the border crisis.” Bovino’s fall and rise illustrates how fundamentally immigration policy, tactics and messaging have changed under President Donald Trump.

US--CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES

Quick-moving wildfire scorches historic California gold mining town, burning multiple homes

SUMMARY: A quick-moving wildfire has burned homes in a California Gold Rush town settled around 1850 by Chinese miners who were driven out of a nearby camp. The fire rapidly grew to over 10 square miles, forcing evacuations Tuesday in Chinese Camp Town and surrounding highways. CalFire reports no immediate injuries or deaths, but the fire was uncontained Wednesday morning. At least five homes burned in the rural town. Fire officials have requested additional resources, including fire engines and aircraft. The blaze, known as the 6-5 Fire, was caused by lightning.

US--ELECTION 2026-REDISTRICTING-WHAT TO KNOW

Missouri takes up Trump’s redistricting effort in Republican push to win more US House seats

SUMMARY: Missouri lawmakers are meeting in a special session to redraw the state’s U.S. House districts. The session that begins Wednesday is part of President Donald Trump’s push to help Republicans retain control of Congress in next year’s elections. Missouri is the third state to pursue mid-decade redistricting for partisan advantage, following Texas and California. Republicans currently hold six of Missouri’s eight congressional seats. A revised map proposed by Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe could give Republicans a chance to win seven seats in next year’s elections. More states may follow with their own redistricting efforts.

US--TRUMP-THE LATEST

The Latest: New Polish president endorsed by Trump visits White House

SUMMARY: Poland’s new president is visiting the White House hoping to strengthen his relationship with President Donald Trump and make the case that the U.S. needs to maintain its strong military presence in his country. Trump involved himself in Poland’s elections by endorsing Karol Nawrocki’s nationalist candidacy. Now he’s increasingly frustrated by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to sit down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to end the war between Poland’s neighbors. Also, some of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims plan a news conference with lawmakers outside the Capitol. And an appeals court says Trump cannot use Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan gang members.

US--TRUMP-ALIEN ENEMIES ACT

Trump cannot use Alien Enemies Act to deport members of Venezuelan gang, appeals court rules

SUMMARY: A federal appeals court has ruled President Donald Trump cannot use an 18th-century wartime law to speed the deportations of people his administration accuses of membership in a Venezuelan gang. Two judges on a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals are agreeing with immigrant rights groups that Trump improperly invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 against Tren de Aragua in March. The majority found the gang wasn’t a legitimate target for a law that’s only been used three times before in history, all during declared wars. The case will likely end up at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Iran increased stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium before Israeli attack, UN agency says

SUMMARY: A confidential United Nations report seen by The Associated Press says Iran further increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels before Israel launched its military attack on June 13. The report by the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency said that as of June 13, Iran had 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60%, an increase of 32.3 kilograms since the IAEA’s last report in May. That material is a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%. The report also said that Iran and the IAEA haven’t reached agreement on resuming inspections of sites affected by Israeli and U.S. bombing in June.

Russia launches over 500 drones and missiles at Ukraine as Zelenskyy seeks more support

SUMMARY: Russia has launched over 500 drones and two dozen missiles at Ukraine, targeting civilian infrastructure, especially energy facilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the attacks mainly hit western and central Ukraine, injuring at least five people. Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s attempts to mediate peace, Russia’s assaults continue. Zelenskyy calls for tougher sanctions on Russia, accusing President Vladimir Putin of demonstrating impunity. Meanwhile, Putin is meeting with leaders from China, North Korea and India, who support Russia’s war efforts. Zelenskyy is in Europe for talks on military aid and diplomatic support.

ML--GAZA CITY-DISPLACEMENT

With Israeli advance looming, Palestinians in Gaza City ask when to leave and where to go

SUMMARY: With Israel promising a punishing new offensive, Palestinians in Gaza’s largest city are paralyzed with fear. They are unsure where to go, when to leave and if they will ever return. Israel has declared Gaza City to be a combat zone while the military moves forward with plans to overtake it in a campaign to crush Hamas. Parts of the city are already considered “red zones,” where Palestinians have been ordered to evacuate ahead of expected heavy fighting. That has left people there on edge. Departing the city now could mean leaving for good, but staying behind could be deadly.

UAE warns against Israeli annexation of West Bank as strikes in Gaza kill 31

SUMMARY: The United Arab Emirates has warned that any Israeli move to annex the occupied West Bank would be a “red line,” without specifying its possible impact on the landmark normalization accord between the two countries. The warning came as Israel pressed ahead with the initial stages of its latest major offensive in famine-stricken Gaza City. Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip overnight and into Wednesday killed at least 31 people, according to local hospitals. Israelis were taking part in a “day of disruption” to protest the call-up of 60,000 reserves for the expanded operation, which has sparked global condemnation and left the country increasingly isolated.

Wall Street steadies itself as Alphabet pulls tech stocks higher

SUMMARY: Wall Street is steadying as Alphabet and other technology stocks rise. The S&P 500 added 0.3% Wednesday and was on track to break its two-day losing streak since setting its latest all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 152 points, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.9%. Google’s parent company was one of the strongest forces lifting the market after avoiding some of the worst-case scenarios in an antitrust case. Also helping to steady Wall Street was the bond market, where yields fell following a weaker-than-expected update on the U.S. job market. A day earlier, climbing yields worldwide raised the pressure on the stock market.

SCI--MARS-CORE

Marsquakes indicate a solid core for the red planet, just like Earth

SUMMARY: It turns out Mars has a solid core just like Earth. A Chinese-led research team reported Wednesday that the heart of Mars, while small, is indeed solid. The scientists based their findings on seismic readings from NASA’s InSight lander on Mars, which recorded more than 1,300 marsquakes before shutting down in 2022. Previous studies pointed to liquid at the center of Mars. The solid innermost core is likely composed of iron and nickel, the same ingredients as Earth’s, but quite possibly also enriched with lighter elements like oxygen. The latest study appeared in the journal Nature.

US-MED--BE WELL-WEIGHTED VESTS

Yes, weighted vests can help amp up your workout. Here’s what to know

SUMMARY: Weighted vests are increasingly showing up in fitness classes and on jogging tracks. Social media influencers tout them as a way to keep bones healthy, increase performance and even accelerate weight loss. The vests add resistance to the torso through pockets with removable weights. But experts say there’s a lack of robust research on their benefits, so it’s unclear how much of the hype surrounding them is justified. They say some people, such as seniors or those who are pregnant, should be cautious about using them. And they urge people to seek guidance before using them for the first time.

It’s been two years since his most recent Grand Slam title, which — to him — must feel like an eternity. Last season was his first without earning at least one since 2017.
