NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – A pregnant custodian is “alone” and without health benefits after her wrongful termination from Barnard College, union officials said.

Custodian Shakira Zahiruddin, a mother of two who is eight months pregnant, was terminated on Aug. 26 in “blatant violation” of her union contract, according to a grievance filed by TWU Local 264.

The union contract stipulates that layoffs happen based on seniority, but Zahiruddin was more senior than at least one person who kept their job, union officials said. She’s worked at Barnard for over a year and gives it her all every day, Zahiruddin said.
