The family of an 8-year-old boy who was attacked by a shark in the ocean off Key Largo on Labor Day is speaking out as he continues his recovery.
In a statement Wednesday, the family of Richard Burrows said he suffered a "significant" injury when he was bitten on his knee by a black tip shark while snorkeling on Monday afternoon.
Burrows' father, David, and 10-year-old sister, Rose, were also snorkeling when the shark rushed at them, the family said.
"The initial injury inflicted on Richard was significant, but due to the help of a number of people, it was contained," the statement read. "Richard’s 10-year-old sister, Rose, was instrumental in her brother’s rescue and both of her parents are immensely proud of the strength of character and composure she demonstrated under pressure."
