Cambridge’s new recreation complex will feature a striking piece of public art after council gave its approval Tuesday night.
The installation will be created by Mi’kmaq artist Jordan Bennett, whose work has been shown across Canada and internationally. A jury of experts and community members picked his proposal, and the city’s arts and culture advisory committee also backed the choice before it went to council.
Bennett’s design will include seven silk spirals hanging in the atrium, mixed with stones collected from the Cambridge area and 3D printed pieces made from recycled plastic.
The artwork will also draw on Mi’kmaq creation stories and focus on themes of community and connectedness.
During the day, it’s meant to feel like a joyful walk in nature, while at night it will softly glow
