Concerns about possible contamination have delayed Cambridge’s plan to buy Civic Legion Park from the Royal Canadian Legion.
Council voted Tuesday to order a Phase 2 environmental study before finalizing the $4-million purchase of the park at 575 Margaret St. , which the city has leased and operated as a public park for nearly 35 years.
A Phase 1 assessment completed in May flagged the site’s past use as a landfill and its proximity to rail and industrial lands, recommending further subsurface testing. While staff said risks are low because clean fill was added in 1990 and the land has been undisturbed since, several councillors pushed for more certainty.
