Demolition of a listed building that housed soldiers during wartime has been branded “unacceptable” by a heritage body.

The officers’ mess at Winston Barracks in Lanark was built ahead of the Second World War and later became the home of the Cameronian Regiment.

The barracks were renowned for their spacious grounds, with the married quarters having private gardens and a playground.

There was also a central parade ground and a sports field.
