LOWELL, Mass. (WPRI) — Students at UMass Lowell have been ordered to shelter in place as police search for a person with a gun on campus, 12 News has learned.

University officials said police were alerted to reports of a man on South Campus carrying an object "suspected of being a firearm."

There was no report of a shooting, according to UMass Lowell. All on-campus classes and events on campus were canceled.

Massachusetts State Police said Wednesday afternoon they are "aware of a video circulating of a person who appears to be armed" near the Riverview Suites dorms on Middlesex Street.

Lowell police confirmed an increased law enforcement presence in the area and extending into Pawtucket and Broadway streets.

FBI Boston also responded to the campus.
