LOWELL, Mass. (WWLP) - Police have identified a juvenile allegedly responsible for carrying a firearm on a university campus, prompting a shelter-in-place order.

NBC Boston states that the firearm, which caused alarm, was later found to be an Airsoft replica. The incident began when the university alerted the campus about a potential gunman at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies responded swiftly to the alert, converging on the campus in search of the reported gunman. However, no actual gunman was found during the search.

Officers were assigned to each of the university's residence halls overnight. There were about 100 officers assisting in the area on Wednesday.

Following the incident, the university resumed classes on Thursday.
