The council voted in a 10-5 straw poll on Wednesday to support a budget amendment allocating about $386,000 to keep the Skillman Southwestern Library Branch open an additional year.

Dallas City Manager Kimberly Tolbert called the city's approach to managing its portfolio of libraries "behind" other major cities.

The comments came during a city council discussion of a budget amendment to keep the Skillman Southwestern library branch , facing closure from budget cuts for a second straight year , open another 12 months.

"The world of the library systems has changed, and we are behind," Tolbert said. "To begin the work in this upcoming year around a more sustainable library system with a regional focus. That's where we're headed.”
