The Killeen City Council unanimously approved funding for the co-responder program, which embeds a social worker with responding Killeen Police Department officers on mental health related calls.
The program was initially a victim of federal funding cuts, but by passing this amended interlocal agreement with Central County Services, the program will be funded with $30,000 in city funds.
The remaining funding for salaries of the social workers will be paid by Central County Services.
Killeen Police Chief Pete Lopez Jr. mentioned that it was Councilwoman Nina Cobb who originally made a motion to provide $30,000 in funding for the co-responder program.
“So, we’re going to restart this program,” he said to the City Council during the workshop session of Tuesday’s council meeting.
