WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) -

A northeast Kansas police department warns of a new scam targeting churchgoers.

The Seneca Police Department shares that a scam artist is pretending to be a pastor at NorthRidge Church.

HOW IT WORKS

Recently, a scammer started emailing church members, asking for them to purchase gift cards.

“There’s always a sense of urgency,” said Lead Pastor Cale Lane. “That’s a key thing with the scammers is there a sense of urgency. ‘I need you to respond quickly or I need you to respond right now.’ So, that takes advantage of people’s generosity and their compassion, and that’s really what’s maybe the most unfortunate.”

Nobody fell for the scam at his church. There were some red flags with what people found in their inboxes.
