PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Early voting begins Sept. 19 in Virginia, and voters in the state will have the chance to select the first woman to become governor, with women at the top of the ticket for both Republicans and Democrats.

This year, people will have extra time to make sure they're registered, as they can do so up until 10 days before the Nov. 4 election. Previously, voter registration ended 21 days before an election.

"Oct. 24 will be the deadline to register," said Norfolk Director of Elections Stephanie Iles. "That gives people more time and greater access for voters to get registered in a timely manner."

While local election offices are preparing for Nov. 4, this year comes with a slight change.
