EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — The arrival of Allegiant Air at Atlantic City International Airport could help protect the airport if Spirit Airlines continues to reduce routes, especially in light of Friday’s announcement that Spirit has filed for bankruptcy protection again.

Earlier this month, the airport announced that Allegiant would begin flying routes to and from Florida later this year.

The announcement came as Spirit warned about its ability to stay in business. Spirit Aviation Holdings, the budget carrier’s parent company, recently said it has “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue as a going concern over the next year — which is accounting-speak for running out of money.
