Hundreds of little voices together became one roaring cheer Wednesday as all the students of Tyrone Thompson Elementary School called out their beloved teacher’s name:

“Ms. Jun! Ms. Jun! Ms. Jun!”

Ali Jun, Thompson’s music teacher, had just won another major award: the title of 2026 Nevada State Teacher of the Year.

She hammed and danced, as she is known to do. The kids ate it up. She told them to remember her when they’re famous.

Later, from her classroom, Jun says she creates a safe, inviting place for kids to be themselves.

Kids, especially small children, she explained, have a hard time getting their emotions out. Music helps them do that, even if they’re nonverbal. Music also builds a sense of community.
