The Nevada State Board of Education has named its top three picks to be the next state superintendent.

They are Sylvia Mitchell, a district superintendent in Texas; Heather Sanchez, an administrator from Washington state; and Victor Wakefield, a Teach for America executive with Nevada ties. The three come from a slate of 19 applicants .

The board reviewed applications, publicly interviewed contenders last week and may offer advice to Gov. Joe Lombardo, who will make the appointment.

Under state law, the governor has the authority to make an appointment regardless of the board’s recommendations. A spokesperson did not comment on Lombardo’s timeline to make a decision.
