AKRON, Ohio — An Akron man will spend at least 18 years in prison after he pleaded guilty Wednesday to fatally shooting a man inside the victim’s Firestone Park home.

A Summit County judge sentenced Byron Johnson, 29, to life in prison, but Johnson will be eligible for parole after serving at least 18 years for the 2024 murder of Darnell McGrady, according to Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich.

“This was a tragic and senseless killing,” Kolkovich said in a statement. “While nothing can bring Darnell back, I hope this conviction allows his loved ones to take another step forward in the healing process. My thoughts are with them as they continue to grapple with this loss.”

The shooting occurred in November 2024. Officers first were called to a home on the 100 block of East Wilbet
