Angela Rayner’s political career is hanging in the balance pending the outcome of an investigation by the Prime Minister’s independent ethics adviser.

The Deputy Prime Minister referred herself to Sir Laurie Magnus after receiving fresh legal advice that she should have paid a higher rate of stamp duty on the purchase of her £800,000 apartment in Hove in May.

The watchdog is expected to report his findings within the next week or two – but there are reports it could come as early as today.
