A three-month-old horse named Takhini was struck and killed by a vehicle travelling on the Alaska Highway on Aug. 30, prompting heartbreak in the local community and renewed calls to better protect Yukon’s wild horses.

"This year we have lost four horses and the year is not even over yet. The Yukon is growing and the highway is getting busier. We need better signage, especially signage highly visible at night reminding motorists of the horses," wrote Aud Fischer on the Yukon Wild Horses group.

According to Heather Brown who administrates the group, a yearling named Lupin was similarly struck two-weeks prior but survived the ordeal.

"They're not usually the wildlife that's hit, because they are a little bit more savvy about the road," Brown said.
