In a dramatic congressional hearing on Wednesday, Louisiana Senator John Kennedy issued a stark warning to his colleagues, using an image of the “Alien” movie monster to illustrate the potential dangers of contaminated foreign shrimp. Kennedy’s remarks focused on recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalls of shrimp from an Indonesian exporter found to contain the radioactive isotope Cesium-137.

“Mr. President, this is a photograph of the alien from the movie ‘Alien,’” Kennedy said, holding up a picture. “This is what you could end up looking like if you eat some of the raw, frozen shrimp being sent to the United States by other countries.”

The senator was referring to an August FDA public release advising against the consumption of certain shrimp from Indonesian company PT. Bahari
