NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- Two bills to crack down on unlicensed commuter vans, known as dollar vans, in the five boroughs will be heading to the New York City Council floor next week.

One of the proposals would charge the NYPD and the Taxi and Limousine Commission with developing and maintaining safety regulations for dollar vans. Traffic enforcement officers would then be expected to use a checklist to issue the maximum penalty for violations.

The second of the proposed bills would have the Department of Transportation (DOT) research service areas and ridership for dollar vans, survey commuters and report on areas where the vans may interfere with public transportation.
