Carnegie Mellon University is convening a working group to study the fence — a campus staple aimed at promoting student free expression — after a summer of contention surrounding the century-old landmark.
In a letter to the CMU community Thursday morning, President Farnam Jahanian said 17 students, professors and alumni will convene to consider the fence’s role at CMU, and find ways to ensure it will remain on campus while simultaneously “addressing the realities of modern society and the needs of our diverse campus community.”
Their recommendations are expected by the end of the academic year.
