COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Gov. Henry McMaster has issued a new executive order aimed at eliminating certain foods in South Carolina from the program responsible for food stamps.
The governor’s office said the order, dated Sept. 3 but formally announced the following day, directs the South Carolina Department of Social Services to submit a waiver request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture to “to exclude the purchase of candy, energy drinks, soft drinks, and sweetened beverages from the list of eligible foods under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps.”
The governor previously floated the idea of an executive order regarding SNAP in early August.
