COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster is asking the state's social services agency to request a waiver that would allow the state to ban candy and soda from SNAP benefits.
McMaster issued an executive order that calls for the South Carolina Department of Social Services to submit a waiver request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that would restrict some items from the list of foods that can be purchased by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). If it's approved, it would exclude the purchase of candy, energy drinks, soft drinks, and sweetened beverages from that list. .
"I thank President Trump and his Administration for providing us with the ability to enhance our SNAP program so we can create healthier outcomes for South Carolina families."
