Homicide detectives across Europe are racing against the clock in a desperate attempt to keep the primary suspect in the disappearance — and presumed murder — of British toddler Maddie McCann behind bars.

Law enforcement officials in Germany are voicing alarm that the “dangerous” chief suspect in the 2007 disappearance of Maddie will soon leave prison and could flee the country.

Prosecutors believe Christian Brueckner, 48, killed the three-year-old girl at a Portuguese resort in a missing persons case that has captivated the world and remains unsolved.

Now, there are fears that cops may not have sufficient evidence to lay charges against convicted sex offender Brueckner. He is due to be released from a German prison by Sept. 17.
