BOONE, N.C. ( WBTV /Gray News) - A man on an electric bike died after he hit a deer in western North Carolina Tuesday night.

The crash took place in Watauga County along Pine Run Road near Moses Spring Road around 8:30 p.m.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 55-year-old Michael Allen Duncan Jr. was riding his motorized e-bike when a deer ran out on the road in front of him.

When the bike collided with the deer, officials said Duncan was thrown off the e-bike.

He was taken to a local hospital after the crash and later died there.

State troopers said speed was not a factor in the crash.
