Troy — Troy will have license plate readers on its streets for at least another five years thanks to a city council decision last week.

The Troy City Council voted unanimously to approve the city's five-year, $347,500 contract with Flock Cameras. The agreement functions as an extension of the city's contract with the camera company, which has operated license plate readers in the city since July 2023.

The cameras capture images of the outside of cars and their license plate numbers, said Troy Police Chief Josh Jones. There are 27 such cameras in the city, which can be accessed by other law enforcement agencies throughout the state that use the technology, including Michigan State Police.
