OTTAWA — Global Affairs Canada has confirmed that two Canadian citizens are missing in Lisbon following a streetcar accident that occurred on Wednesday. The crash, involving the Elevador da Gloria, a historic streetcar popular with tourists, resulted in at least 17 fatalities and left 21 others injured.
The incident took place during the evening rush hour when the streetcar derailed while carrying a full load of passengers, including locals and tourists from various countries. The head of Lisbon’s Civil Protection Agency reported that one Canadian was among the injured, alongside passengers from seven other nations.
In a statement, Global Affairs expressed its condolences, stating, "Global Affairs Canada is aware of two missing Canadian citizens in Lisbon, Portugal. Consular officials are in contact with local authorities to gather more information." The agency also noted that due to privacy concerns, it cannot disclose further details about the missing individuals or the injured.
