MANCHESTER, N.H. —

A new poll shows a clear frontrunner on the Democratic side of the race for Congress in New Hampshire's 1st District, with a wide-open primary on the Republican side.

It's a strong start for Stefany Shaheen in the first Saint Anselm College Survey Center poll on the Democratic primary for the open congressional seat.

Shaheen holds a comfortable lead at the moment, with 23%. The next closest competitor on the Democratic side is Maura Sullivan at 9%.

"We have Stefany Shaheen, who has a strong last name," said Neil Levesque, of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics. "She's well-known in the state, and she certainly has a strong advantage at this early point in the race.
