Michigan House Republicans have passed legislation that would ban transgender students from using shared restrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identity, requiring them to instead use facilities matching their sex assigned at birth .

The bill was voted out of the House on Thursday, Sept. 4, along party lines with the Republican majority in favor. The legislation is not likely to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate.

The ban would apply to restrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms and shower rooms at private and public elementary and secondary schools, along with colleges, universities and other educational institutions.
