A tragic stabbing rampage early Thursday morning left one young woman dead and several others injured.

RCMP say an 18-year-old woman was killed and at least eight people, ranging in age from 18 to 60, were wounded in a series of violent attacks in Hollow Water First Nation, also known as Waanibiigaaw or Wanipigow, on the east shore of Lake Winnipeg. Police confirmed the suspect, 26-year-old Tyrone Smard, also died after fleeing the community in a stolen vehicle.

Emergency responders were first alerted around 3:45 a.m. when a First Nation safety officer reported an assault in the community. By 5:53 a.m., RCMP had received reports of multiple stabbings. Officers arriving on scene found several victims suffering from serious injuries at two different residences.
