LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Lawmakers are pushing for the addition of “Silver Alerts” to the state’s emergency alert system.

Those alerts would be sent out any time an elderly person or vulnerable adult goes missing.

On Wednesday, lawmakers in the Michigan House of Representatives approved a proposal to launch a Silver Alert system. It would function just like an Amber Alert, which might be issues when a child goes missing.

Right now, Michigan State Police have the ability to let the community know someone is missing through social media or their local news.

But State Rep. Gina Johnsen (R-Portland) believes the same federal technology behind Amber Alerts could help find a missing adult faster by sending messages directly to peoples’ smartphones.
