LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - In the wake of the deadly school shooting in Minnesota, gun violence prevention advocates are demanding stronger gun laws in Michigan.
They are calling on state policymakers to promote the use of Red Flag Laws, and provide funding and education for the Extreme Risk Protection Order Law.
Red Flag Laws are a legal tool used to temporarily remove firearms from people who are deemed by a judge to be a threat.
Skye Thietten is a parent of a middle schooler who was in the Rochester Hills mass shooting at a splash pad in 2024. She says this law could have prevented it.
“In Michigan, it’s designed to help family, health care workers, and or law enforcement to keep a person at risk of harming themselves or others from having access to a gun until their crisis passes,” sa
