The Anchorage Fire Department received a special honor.

It’s called the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. It was presented in Anchorage Thursday by the Department of Defense’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

It’s the highest recognition given for supporting Guard and Reserve employees.

“To be able to bring this honor on the fire department really honors them for their service to the nation and to our community,” said Anchorage Fire Chief Doug Schrage.

This year, ESGR received more than 1,600 nominations for the award.

This marks only the third time an Alaska employer has received the honor.
