Congress, in one of its few bipartisan acts, has declared the Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok a “national security risk” and banned its use in the United States.
A bill aimed at forcing the sale of TikTok to a U.S. owner or banning it altogether passed through Congress in April 2024 and was signed into law by former President Joe Biden. The law, called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, cited national security concerns regarding TikTok's Chinese ownership by ByteDance.
