Boeing has started the process of hiring new workers to replace machinists who have been on strike for a month at three St. Louis–area factories that produce military aircraft. Around 3,200 employees walked off the job on August 4 after rejecting the company’s latest contract proposal.

Since then, negotiations have stalled with little sign of resolution. The US planemaker maintains its proposal is competitive and reflects broader market conditions. For now, it remains unclear when or how the dispute will be resolved. Indeed, the strike has left one of its key defense production hubs facing uncertainty.
