EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) -- The old YMCA building on the corner of Sixth and Court Streets in downtown Evansville has been standing high and mighty awaiting for its next owners. But a denied tax exemption could mean it all goes away.
Stephanie Richard, the director of Indiana Landmarks' Southwest Field Office says since the acquisition, they have been working to find a developer to reinvigorate the building.
“There is literally no one wants to see that as the outcome,” Richard said. “Indiana Landmarks doesn't want to see that. The YMCA doesn't want to see that.”
The building was once used as the old Central High School gymnasium before becoming a part of YMCA. Indiana Landmarks acquired the space from the YMCA in 2023 after moving just across the street.
